Top Ten Treks in The World - #8 - Inca Trail, Peru

Inca Trail - PeruWhen I first materialized the thought of hiking along the world's best trails, it was the Inca Trail that jumped to the top of y todo list. The idea of stepping back in time along ancient stone paths created by the Inca to transport men and material was an irrestable lure. I deampt of immersing myself for four days in fog-laden trails where the discerning eye may spy many of the 500 species of orchids. I hoped to see the snow-capped peaks, lush cloud forests, ancient culture and some of the world’s most famous archeological ruins. However, poor weather allowed only limited views of the distant mountains. Instead, my vision was filled with endless streams of trekkers and their support crews. Having just finished the Kachin Villlage Trek in Burma it was an absolute shock to the system. When the trek culminated waking up to sunrise over the famed stone works of Machu Picchu, enigmatic ruins built over 500 years ago we were instead treated to a fog bowl.

Dissappointing was indeed the word of the day. However, the ruins of Machu Picchu, hewn on top of a mountain, captivates all who behold it. Fortunately, I was lucky enough to return when I worked for the Artritis Society of Canada's Joints in Motion program. On my second trip, we still had overcrowding, but we had much better weather. The alps shined brightly and my second trip through the sun gate lead to a magically cloud ladden view of Machu Picchu which burned off to a golden sunrise.
